I’m Margaret Halsmith. I have been mediating full time since the mid 1990s; that’s heading for 20 years!  I’m based in Perth, Australia and I mediate throughout Western Australia from Esperance to Kalumburu and Perth to Kalgoorlie as well as for interstate and overseas participants

I mediate because I believe that it is the people who are involved who know what is fair and just. They are the people who can create personalised, practical arrangements and agreements which are more satisfactory than enforced decisions on only the legal aspects of a dispute.

I am the Principal at Halsmith Dispute Resolution, my specialist dispute resolution practice. I have been in full-time practice since 1996.  I am also involved in the Australasian and international dispute resolution communities.

Among my areas of particular interest are: maximizing the effectiveness of dispute resolution; standards of dispute resolution practice; dispute resolution when there is entrenched conflict; the role of apology in dispute resolution and participants’ overall well being, during and after dispute resolution.

There’s more detail on my website.

2015 has already been fulfilling. My day to day practice in Australia, mediating commercial matters, sensitive interpersonal matters, sports matters, family law matters, government and community matters, workplace and other matters has kept me busy and continuing to admire and appreciate the resilience and goal focus of people in dispute.

The same tenacity was evident when with former Judge, Maurice Sheehan, I co-mediated in Papua New Guinea early in the year.

During 2015 I will be supporting the Royal Flying Doctor Service by participating in the

With the aim to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, competitors and spectators have raised over $1.5 million since its inception in 1996. All funds from each race go towards outfitting RFDS aircraft with essential medical equipment, vital for treating sick and injured patients.

The 2015 Outback Air Race will be held from 23rd August to 4th September.
